Motor Topology Selection for Traction Motor in EV
The term 'Efficiency' is of paramount importance in the field of electric vehicles, be it for Motor, Motor controller or Battery. The efficiency is the parameter which decides the overall driving range of the Electric Vehicle. Higher the efficiency of the components, higher will be the driving range.
The selection of the topology for the motor is crucial task. If selected wisely, this can lead to cost effectiveness, beyond par performance and ease of driving. On the other hand, if motor topology is selected and designed poorly, this will not only wipe out above benefits but will also push you back in the market.
The variety of topologies are available in the field of motor; it is the responsibility of the designer to select one appropriately based on vehicle specific requirements. Let’s have a look at few topologies of motor most suited for Electric Vehicle Application.
1. Radial Flux motors:
The radial flux motors have been in the industry for centuries. The radial flux motor as the name suggests has radial path of the flux. In these motors, usually the axial length is larger when compared to its diameter.
1.1 Induction motor:
This is a conventional and most trusted topology in the field of motors. The induction motors are in the industry for about two centuries. However, this motor comes with few drawbacks such as high initial cost, complex and heat producing rotor etc.
1.2 Synchronous motors:
The synchronous motors have been used in the electric vehicles more widely because of its inherent benefits such as higher efficiency, simple cooling strategies etc. However higher costs, risk of demagnetization are some drawbacks it brings along.
1.3 Reluctance motors:
The reluctance technology is the latest development in the industry. The reluctance technology combines the advantages of both Induction and Synchronous motors. This is an emerging and very promising topology to be used in the Electric Vehicles.
2. Axial Flux motors:
All of the above motor topologies can be designed in the axial flux configuration. The axial flux configuration leads to a motor which has significantly higher diameter when compared to its axial length. This type of configuration is more suitable for E- Bikes where there is constraint of the axial length.
